Urban Summer
A sultry mezzo soprano, Tenconi sings in seven languages, with her greatest strengths in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. She plays all the saxophones, clarinet, flute, alto flute, and piccolo, Tenconi writes her own music and lyrics and has a rich repertoire steeped in the tradition of the Great American Songbook as well as the great Brazilian and South American songwriters. Tenconi has been featured on: Classic Arts Showcase (PBS); Sabado al Mediodia (Channel 41); Singers Unlimited (WBGO); The Today Weekend Show (NBC).
Born and reared in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cecilia Tenconi began studying classical flute at age 10. She was a member of the Children’s Choir at the Colon Theater (the premier opera house in Buenos Aires), and in her teen years, toured and recorded with various rock bands. She also performed on flute regularly for a children’s television program.
After high school, Tenconi entered Berklee College of Music in Boston where she studied jazz improvisation with John Laporta and saxophone with Andy McGhee , and graduated with a major in film scoring.
During those years, Tenconi began playing saxophone and clarinet professionally, moving into a solid jazz repertoire and soon heading her own quartet, working in numerous bars and clubs in the Boston/Cambridge area.
After moving to New York, Tenconi began touring and recording with a number of Brazilian, Latin, African, and Caribbean bands, including Eddie Martinez, Ray Barreto, Frank Colon, Café, Pe de Boi, Ojoyo, Arrow, Tania Maria and Ricardo Arjona. She also played with jazz luminaries, including Herbie Mann, Chico O’Farril Big Band, Diva Big Band, and David Kikoski. She also worked as a side person for Vicky Sue Robinson, Bette Middler, and Manhattan Transfer.
In 2002 Tenconi returned to school and obtained a Master of Arts from the City College of New York studying under Professor Ron Carter. Tenconi has played in some of the most prestigious venues in the USA and around the world, including: Avery Fisher Hall, The Apollo Theater, Village Gate, S.O.B’S, Palladium, Birdland, The Metropolitan Museum, The American Museum of Natural History, Zinc Bar, Café Wha, Paramount Theater, Town Hall, Webster Hall, Symphony Space and the New York Aquarium in New York; Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; New Orleans Jazz Festival, New Orleans; Festival Musique de Rue, Nimes, France; Festival de Musica del Caribe, Cartagena, Colombia; Reggae on the River, Piercy California; The King’s Palace in Morocco; 350th year Anniversary of Montreal, Canada; 450th year Anniversary of Pasto, Colombia; Stockholm Water Festival, Sweden; Villena Jazz Festival, Spain; Standard Bank Jazz Festival, South Africa; St Kitts Music Festival, St Kitts, West Indies; Tchaikovsky Hall, Moscow, Russia; Philarmonic Theater, Kemerovo, Siberia, Russia.
